OUR HISTORY - OUR POWER
Deep roots bear eternal fruit. Our history is our power. The GJCF is built upon reliable foundations that go back thousands of years. Our philosophy, approach and driving ethos are informed by 4000 years of collective Jewish experience and wisdom. Imagine consulting a wise sage on any matter of life and global events; a sage who has been around from the beginning of time, seen the worst and the best in mankind, and has lived to tell about it. This is the GJCF - an entity dedicated to plumb the depths of millennia-rich Jewish experience and apply its wisdom to modern life, to learn how to face all our challenges, personal, social and global.
Our more recent history begins in the 20th century - the most radical period in all of time, when we witnessed the ultimate paradox: unprecedented destruction and unparalleled growth, the human race falling to its lowest and rising to its highest.
Gershon Jacobson: Warrior for truth; Courageous voice
For over fifty years Gershon Jacobson (1934-2005) stood at the forefront of public Jewish life. As a veteran journalist and commentator for some of the most eminent newspapers, including the New York Herald Tribune, the Yiddish Day Jewish Journal and Israel's largest daily Yediot Acharonot, Gershon used his powerful writing and analytical skills to faithfully document the destruction, rebirth and renaissance of Jews and Judaism.
From his young years under Stalin's tyranny, through his youth walking the streets of war torn Europe; from the ashes of a destroyed old world to the rebirth of Israel; from the revitalization of Jews in America to the horror of terrorism - Gershon was a living record of the most traumatic and exciting period in all of Jewish history. He told the story and served as an indispensable guide to understand the world in which we live. In the words of Nobel Laureate Elie Wiesel: "Gershon was a warrior for truth."
Gershon's crowning journalistic achievement was the establishment in 1972 of the weekly Yiddish-English newspaper, "The Algemeiner Journal." For over three decades, the Algemeiner Journal has been a vital lifeline of continuity for the Jewish community - an idealistic fighter for truth and goodness, for spiritual integrity and moral clarity. It has served as the newspaper transmitting the culture and tradition of the six million Jews who perished in the holocaust to the survivor community and their children.
Gershon Jacobson died on Sunday, May 29, 2005. His legacy, however, lives on. To continue serving as a courageous voice to address the challenges ahead, family and friends have established the Gershon Jacobson Jewish Continuity Foundation, committed to perpetuate his pioneering spirit by bringing our rich history and soul to the next generation growing up in prosperity and freedom. Combining an intimate appreciation of our past and an understanding of the issues of tomorrow, the Foundation will harness the trusted brand strength of the Algemeiner Journal, and utilize all means of modern technology and a new Algemeiner News Media Information Center to inform, educate Jews of all backgrounds with the power of our heritage history and culture, and bring vision and clarity for the future.
The Foundation is driven to serve as a fearless voice, fighting Israel's cause in the media and for Jewish pride and consciousness, both in our civic and social lives, as well as our interactions with the secular world; a courageous, independent advocate for the most important issues facing the Jewish people and the state of Israel.
One of the greatest stories of our time is the rebirth of Judaism and the state of Israel from the ashes of the Holocaust and the destruction of the old home to the rebirth of the Jewish homeland. We will celebrate this unprecedented achievement by preserving for posterity the legacy of the Jewish institutions and individuals and all their achievements over the past 70 years as the Jewish people underwent upheaval and renewal.
Not merely as a study of history, but as a lesson - an inspiration and guide - for the future. Information is power and mass media is influence. Now more than ever the 4000 year old voice of our people must be amplified, bringing direction, vision and purpose to an increasingly complex world facing a new set of unprecedented challenges.
